Celebrating Cancer Survivor's Day

- It was a celebration of life in Marquette Tuesday, as cancer survivors gathered in support of one another.

U.P. Health System - Marquette hosted the 'Cancer Survivor's Day Celebration.' It was a chance for survivors, those going through cancer and their families to share support and encouragement with friends.

Sue Dionne is a breast cancer survivor, and said to those who are battling cancer now, "My advice would be to stay positive and to surround yourself with family and friends and other people that are positive. That's what's going to get you through cancer or anything that is happening negative in your life."

Oncologist Doctor Philip Lowry shared his thoughts on the event, saying, "To see some of those cases that did well that you haven't seen in a while, their hair has grown back in and they're back smiling, very exciting from both sides."

The most common type of cancer in men is lung cancer and in women, it's breast cancer. Health professionals say many types of cancer can be prevented by living a healthy lifestyle, while others can be detected in recommended screenings.
