Gladstone recall effort moves forward

- A recall effort targeting three Gladstone City Commissioners could be on the ballot in May.

Recall sponsor Timothy Declaire has named Hugo Mattonen, Joseph Maki, and David Nemacheck in recall petitions filed on January 16, 2015.  The materials have been reviewed by the Delta County Clerk and the Gladstone City Clerk and have been found to contain more than the minimum of 432 valid signatures.

The three commissioners have until February 16 to file written challenges. After the challenge period, if the minimum signatures remain valid, the county clerk calls for a recall election for May 5, 2015.

The names of the three officials targeted for recall will appear on the ballot along with any new candidates who file paperwork with the Gladstone City Clerk within 10 days of the call for the recall election.

The petition language was approved on August 20, 2014 by the Delta County Election Commission. The recall sponsor had until February 16th to file petitions before the recall language expired. The deadline for filing to be on the May ballot is January 30, 2015.

The petition language stated the reason for recall: "levying an additional 1.8236 mills to the Gladstone City millage."

The minimum number of valid signatures required is 25% of the number of votes for all candidates for Governor in the 2010 gubernatorial election within the City of Gladstone.  With 1726 votes in that election, 25% of that is the minimum of 432 signatures needed for the recall petition.
