MARQUETTE -- Presque Isle Park in Marquette will be open a little later some nights next month so people can see the stars better.

The Marquette City Commission has approved a trial period for a Dark Sky Park.

It'll be in the area around the pavilion near the entrance. The park will be open for stargazing until one in the morning on Fridays and Saturdays in October when it's clear.

Scott Stobbelaar with the Marquette Astronomical Society says, "Even the Milky Way is visible which is impossible from many other locations in the city. So, I think Peter White would be very happy with what we are doing to utilize the park not only during the day but also at the night to show the beauty of the sky."

The Marquette Police Department has agreed to monitor the park during the trial period.

One city commissioner says they'll have to see how it goes and decide how to proceed in the future.
