Green lights on U.P. snow plows

MARQUETTE COUNTY -- Have you noticed anything different about snow plows across the Upper Peninsula?

All of MDOTs plows in Baraga, Houghton and Mackinac Counties now have green lights on them.

Many county road commissions in Upper Michigan have them, too.

MDOT says it's received a lot of positive feedback from drivers about the plows being more visible thanks to the green lights.

Dan Weingarten with MDOT says, "Green lights are the most easily recognized by the human eye. We pick up green wavelengths better than any other part of the spectrum. They provide a better contrast when it's really snowy or you have low visibility conditions."

The cost to add green lights to a snow plow is less than $100.

All MDOT plows ordered in the future will come equipped with the green lights.

This all started after legislation was passed allowing snow plows in Michigan to have green lights.
