MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP -- Two new roundabouts are coming to Marquette Township.

One will be on US-41 at the intersection near Walmart and Target.

The other is just a ways down at Brickyard Road on US-41 which is near the new Meijer gas station.

There was a public meeting tonight at the Marquette Township Hall. Some people questioned if the roundabouts were necessary.

Experts cite safety as one reason for putting in the roundabouts.

Jeff Barsch is the project manager and works for MDOT. He says, "This is one of the busiest corridors in the U.P. So, they will work to efficiently get that traffic through there. In addition, we're doing a median widening between the two roundabouts to help remove some conflict points as you go through the businesses along that corridor as well."

There are other aspects to the project like moving westbound lanes north to make space for a divided highway that's needed.

The cost of the project is expected to around $6.7 million.

Construction will start in the spring of 2019 and will be finished later that fall.
