The Upper Peninsula Power Company announced today that the recreational site located downstream from its Dam 1 hydroelectric project will be closed starting April 17, 2017 until work being conducted by the Michigan Department of Transportation is completed on the U.S. 2 bridge that spans the Escanaba River.
Because of the site’s temporary closure there will be no access for parking near the tailrace of Escanaba Dam 1. People looking to fish at the facility are encouraged to use the fishing pier near the powerhouse.
UPPCO encourages fishermen, and other outdoor enthusiasts looking to use the site to remember that it will be an active construction zone and to use caution when parking and recreating near the area. Construction has also led to a restroom at the site being replaced with a temporary facility that is housed near the dam’s fishing pier, located near the powerhouse.
