ESCANABA - It's a project that was years in the making.

Today the ribbon was cut on the brand new Escanaba Marketplace. The 8,000 square foot pavilion sits on an acre of land on Ludington Street in Downtown Escanaba. Starting tomorrow it will be home to the Escanaba Farmer's Market, as well as community events, concerts, banquets and more. It was a day for celebration for the team behind the project.

Escanaba Downtown Development Authority Executive Director Ed Legault said, "It feels great (to have it done). It's something we've worked extremely hard to make happen and to see it move from a picture to an entity...it's great."

The total construction cost from start to finish was around $1.3 million. Contributing to about half of that cost were grants from the Hannahville Indian Community as well as state and federal agencies. The Escanaba DDA partnered with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation for a community development block grant. The hope is this marketplace will spur economic development across the area.

Said Legault, "People can see that we're trying to do things in the community to brighten it up. This is a place that is certainly going to be a public gathering area. As we bring more people in, both citizens and visitors from out of town, for events here, They'll come to our downtown, they'll shop at stores, and then what you'll find is, thay'll come and do it again."

A new playground and a few other minor details are yet to be completed. And the DDA is looking into adding doors to make the marketplace usable year-round.
