ISHPEMING - There are a few ways to protect yourself from identity theft when going online.
TruNorth Federal Credit Union hosted a seminar to help prevent their members from being victims of identity theft. The presentation from online security provider CastleGarde Incorporated focused on safety tips when using the Internet.
"The biggest thing I tell people, and really it sounds so simple, but it's so prolific, is really making sure that passwords are complex," says CastleGarde VP of Operations Bryan Kaylor. "So many people use things like 'password 123' and it's so easy to crack those if someone is actually trying to hack your account."
He says his company recommends a password of at least 16 characters - using a combination of numbers, letters and symbols. The Federal Trade Commission estimates as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year.
