Cancer is the second leading cause of death across the state of Michigan and several counties in the U.P. have higher cancer rates than the national average.

The American Cancer Society’s signature event ‘Relay For Life’ is being held in Baraga Friday to fight the deadly disease. Dozens of residents teamed up to walk to and raise money in hopes of finding a cure for cancer.

Christine Wilson, Event Organizer said, “It definitely hits home for a lot of people, and most people are here because they have been touched by cancer either themselves or know a loved one that has been. So its definitely powerful ceremonies and to fight back against the disease and just get awareness of what cancer is and how we can help stop it.”

The event continues through 11 am Saturday, and teams will continue to walk throughout the night.
