The 41 North Film Festival returns to Michigan Tech’s Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts Nov. 1-4 with over 20 films, guest filmmakers and panels, music, food, prizes, and sled dogs!

The festival’s opening night film on Thursday, 11/1, is SCIENCE FAIR, a documentary about nine high-school students preparing for the highly competitive International Science and Engineering Fair. A panel discussion with science educators will follow the film.

On Friday, November 2nd at 7:30 p.m., Houghton native Heather Courtney will present her new film THE UNAFRAID. THE UNAFRAID focuses on three Georgia DACA students, whose dreams of attending college are threatened when the state deems them ineligible for in-state tuition and bans them from attending the state’s top universities.

Courtney was last in the Keweenaw working on her Emmy-award winning documentary WHERE SOLDIERS COME FROM about a group of Hancock High School graduates who joined the National Guard together. She is an accomplished filmmaker whose films have appeared nationally on PBS. In 2014, she received a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship awarded to those with exceptional creative ability in the arts. An open reception for Heather Courtney will follow the screening of the THE UNAFRAID.

On Saturday afternoon, 11/3, the festival will feature a documentary about rural healthcare issues, THE PROVIDERS, followed by a discussion with Dr. Leslie Hayes, who is featured in the film, and Ray Sharp from the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department.

Saturday evening, the festival explores our complicated mining history and its intersections with other parts of the country. BISBEE ’17 tells a story of copper mining in Bisbee, Arizona where a brutal act of retaliation against labor organizing efforts in 1917 still haunts the town and defines the relationship of the community to its ancestors. Filmmaker Robert Greene will be joined by a panel featuring historians from Michigan Tech and the Keweenaw National Historic Park for a discussion and Q&A following the film.

On Sunday, 11/4 at 2:30 pm, festival goers will have the opportunity to present a work-in-progress screening of a new film about women sled dog mushers (working title: COPPERDOG). Directors  Laurie Little and Anuradha Rana will lead a Q&A about their work and solicit input from the audience. There will also be sled dogs on hand for people to meet and learn more about.

In addition to these film events, audiences can enjoy a whole host of films—all free—about inspiring and engaging people and ideas. By bringing compelling stories about the world and today’s important issues to the Keweenaw—along with filmmakers whose research and artistry tell those stories—the 41 North Film Festival offers the community an opportunity to consider
and discuss complex questions around science, art, engineering, industry, politics, history and the human condition, helping us learn from and better understand one another.

Festival sponsors include the Michigan Tech Departments of Humanities and Visual and Performing Arts, and the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts.
