Recently, two Bay College Automotive students placed in the SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Competition held in Grand Rapids, Michigan on April 20-22. The students competed against other colleges throughout the state of Michigan.

Each April, approximately 500 business and industry leaders will coordinate nearly 80 skill and leadership contests that they have prepared for the 1,500 student members from across the state. These are entry-level, hands-on skill contests, evaluated by the same industry leaders who prepare them. The contests are based on industry driven occupational skill standards. Business partners work throughout the school year to plan the competitive events and many of them hire their new employees right off the competition floor! Generous industry leaders donate thousands of dollars in prizes in the form of scholarships, tools, reference manuals and training aids for the winners and their schools. First place winners from each division in most contests are offered the opportunity to represent Michigan at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Competition.

Ian Fisher placed 1st and Devin Werner placed 3rd. They were challenged in all areas of the automotive field; diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repair. Ian will represent the State of Michigan in SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Competition held in Louisville, Kentucky on June 25-29.

“We are so excited and proud of our students,” says Michael Gardner, Bay College Automotive Technology Instructor. “Devin and Ian have shown persistence and great work ethic in their classes, as well as, their passion for success doing something they love. Ian will represent Bay College well at Nationals.”
