MANISTIQUE – Bill’s Automotive was destroyed Friday morning by a fire that burned an estimated 2,000 gallons of oil.
Manistique Public Safety is reporting that officers and volunteer firefighter were dispatched to the fire just after 4:00 AM. Upon arrival the building was fully engulfed by flames and winds were causing the flames to block firefighters from the nearest fire hydrant. According to a press release, several waste oil containers had also caught fire, causing the fire to spread further, including into vehicles parked around the building. A total of ten cars were destroyed in the blaze.
The business and its contents were completely destroyed in the fire and officials have deemed it a total loss.
There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. Manistique Public Safety was assisted by the Hiawatha Township Volunteer Fire Department.
The Manistique Department of Public Works was brought to the scene to contain the remaining oil and the Michigan DEQ will monitor additional clean up efforts.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
