NEGAUNEE TWP. – A boating trip on the Dead River Basin was cut short when the boat caught fire shortly after launch.
The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department is reporting that the incident happened around 8:00 Thursday evening. Deputies on scene say the boat’s owner, Marquette resident Ryan Hammack, told them the occupants noticed smoke coming from the instrument panel and the engine compartment. A fire extinguisher was used to no avail.
The group flagged down a nearby boat and a second fire extinguisher failed to stop the fire. The people in Hammack’s boat transferred to the other boat and were taken to shore.
The boat was fully engulfed in flames by time rescuers arrived on scene. Sheriff’s Department personnel transported fire fighters to the scene and they were able to put out the fire. The boat has since blown to the shore of an island west of the boat launch.
The Sheriff’s Department says Hammack has arranged to have to boat removed. No injuries were reported.
