Council Rejects Manitowoc Community Garden Proposal

News
Manitowoc, Wi (WFRV) –

Steven Metzger has won his battle to Save Union Park – after the Manitowoc Common Council voted unanimously against turning the lower portion of the park into a community garden.

“Troops trained here and met here in preparation for the civil war,” says Metzger. “So this is a memorial dedicated to them.”

Mayor Justin Nickels says the garden is a unique idea – but that Union Park turned out to be the wrong location. 25% of the garden’s produce was to be donated to local food pantries, the remaining portion would belong to those who worked the garden.

“I think even those that are opposed to it are appreciative that this group wants to donate proceeds back to the community and people who need it most,” he says. “The question is just location.”

Officials say they’ll now try to find a new place for the garden. Hoping for community support, and a little less controversy.
