MARQUETTE – A special lecture was held today at the Peter White Public Library regarding a certain topic- Yoopers.

Titled, “U.P. English, Eh?,” the lecture takes a look at why Yoopers sound the way they do. The discussion is hosted by Dr. Wil Rankinen, who has analyzed Yooper culture for research.

“I’ve been doing a study across the U.P. at six different locations looking at various linguistic features associated with production, perception, and attitude and beliefs,” said Dr. Wil Rankinen, Assistant Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Grand Valley State University. “This talk brings in new research that I’ve been doing on that as well as the sauna study that I’ve been doing, which both are actually U.P. wide studies.”

There will be another lecture held July 11 in Sault Ste. Marie at the Lake Superior State University library and July 12 in Ironwood at the Carnegie Library.
