MARQUETTE — This weekend, Lakeview Arena will be the host of the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association state tournament.
A variety of teams from a number of districts across Michigan are expected to attend the weekend-long event.
Andrew MacIver, Assistant Director of Community Services for Marquette County says, “There’s actually some really good hockey here this weekend and this is what we call the 18-U Tier 2. It’s travel hockey so there’s a lot of good kids here. Chances are some of them might even play some college hockey, some junior hockey. It’ll definitely be a lot of fun.”
A total of 4 games officially kicks-off the tournament today.
Tomorrow, games start at 9 in the morning and run through 7 in the evening just in time to see NMU hockey face Bowling Green in the WCHA tournament.
George Belkowski, President of Marquette Junior Hockey says, “This is a big stage for these kids, they’re very excited to be a part of the tournament. They’re going to play against competition from basically all over the state. They’ve all earned their place in this tournament and it’s going to be a fun tournament. We’re going to have some good hockey.”
And with all of the players and their families expected, you can count on their presence having an impact on the local economy.
Belkowski says, “This keeps us on the map. It keeps people aware of Marquette and what it has to offer. It keeps people aware of how important hockey is to the community, how big hockey is here. So we’re very excited to put this on and hopefully it’ll be a big success.”
The hockey tournament is open to the public and free of charge.
If you can’t make it out this weekend, Lakeview will be the host of another junior tournament next weekend.
