ESCANABA — About 150 students in Delta County participated in the nationwide school walkout.
Escanaba Middle and High School students gathered for 17 minutes to pay tribute to the 17 vicitims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas School shooting. The cousin of one Escanaba student was killed in that shooting.
One student from Escanaba high school told the gathered group, “I’d just like to thank all of you for having the courage and the power in yourselves to get up, out of your seats, and walk out here for at least 17 minutes. But this is not the end. This is just the start of something, of change.”
Another student added, “We’re a small town in the middle of nowhere. But change starts small. Don’t give up in what your believing in. Don’t stop doing stuff like this. Keep pushing and change will happen.”
The students remained outside for 17 minutes and then went back to class. School officials were aware of the walkout and had given permission.
Students across the country participated in walkouts today to raise awareness for safety in schools.
