Fourth annual Small Business Saturday comes to Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Originally created by American Express to support local mom and pop stores, Small Business Saturday is in its fourth annual year. And thanks to the holiday push, business in Green Bay is booming.

“It’s very gratifying to know that we can be busy and we don’t have to be a big-box store,” said Mary Rydell, owner of Scanhome Furnishings and Primal Eye. “I would say during the holiday season it’s been at least double, maybe triple the number of people that we’ve had.”

And for the Bormann sisters, it’s the personal touch and unique gifts that local shops offer that keep them coming back.

“You know you buy something and you realize you’re giving back to the community,” said Cindy Bormann.

Shoppers told Local 5 News that when they do shop in the big-box stores, the hustle and bustle of the crowds and plethora of sales assistances makes them feel more like just a number.

“The smaller businesses are a lot more friendly,” said Kate Janiak.
