Helen Newberry Joy Hospital is happy with the grant it was awarded this week by the Superior Health Foundation.
According to the Radio Results Network, the money will allow the hospital to buy diabetic retinopathy telehealth equipment. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among working-age adults in the United States.
The grant will allow the hospital to buy digital retinal imaging hardware to do diabetic retinopathy screenings locally in the Gibson Family Health Clinic.
These images will then be reviewed by a qualified eye care specialist elsewhere. This will save patients travel, time, and money previously spent to get to these appointments, according to Chief Nursing Officer Joe Johnson.
