One in five children in the Upper Peninsula face hunger every day.
The statistic is one thing people learned tonight during an informational meeting about school backpack programs.
They offer food to children in need over the weekend when they’re not getting meals at school.
There are seven backpack programs throughout Marquette and Alger Counties.
People are needed to help out with the mission.
Haley Mahr is a nutrition educator with the Marquette-Alger RESA. She says, “Depending on the programs some programs need help with fundraising, some need help with volunteers, some could use donations. It kind of just depends on the program.”
