Alger County "Rescue 21" locates lost woman with updated 911 system

AUTRAIN TWP.-- Around 8:30pm yesterday, the Alger County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a woman who was lost in a wooded area near Perch Lake in Autrain Twp. 

Melanie Sue Kaiser, a 61-year-old female from Ohio, advised that she was walking in the woods near Perch Lake Rd. when she became disoriented.  Mrs. Kaiser advised that she was not injured however she could not find her way back to the cabin she was staying.  The Alger County “Rescue 21” squad was dispatched to locate the caller and assist her out of the woods.

By utilization of the updated 911 system, the Alger County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center was able to obtain accurate GPS coordinates of the caller making the rescue possible in a very quick manner. Kaiser was located and escorted to safety within approximately 40 minutes of the 911 call.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office ia also reminding the public that “texting 911” is a viable option if cell phone coverage is poor.
