According to the Centers for Disease Control, there have been 22.8 million to 26.3 million flu illness already since October 2018, with over 289,000 flu-related hospitalizations.

Flu activity nationally is elevated, and Aspirus Iron River Hospital & Clinics has seen an increase in flu activity locally. As such, a visitor restriction has been placed in the hospital to ensure proper infection control and safety.

The restriction includes the following guidelines:

• No more than two visitors for any patient
• No visitors under the age of 12
• No visiting if you have any cold or flu-like symptoms

Emergency room patients are also encouraged to only have accompanying visitors that are absolutely necessary, as we are also seeing increased cases there.

Influenza (also known as flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Flu is different from a cold as it usually comes on suddenly. According to the CDC, people who are sick with flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:

Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
Sore throat
Runny or stuffy nose
Muscle or body aches
Fatigue (tiredness)

Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
*It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

Taking preventative actions can help stop the spread of germs.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people. While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. After using a tissue, throw it in the trash and wash your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth as germs spread this way.

Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like flu.
