ESCANABA– The Bay College community gathered today to dedicate a new veterans memorial.
“It’s important to let people know that, that’s part of their life,” said Bill Lake, Retired Member, Bay College Board of Trustees. “And as it says on the monument, ‘Freedom Isn’t Free.'”
The monument was made possible by donors and the Bay College Foundation…. but it’s been an idea for quite a while now.
“In the 70’s, the Vietnam Veterans placed the tree behind us, it’s a red maple and the weeping willow,” said Lake. “One to stand for blood and the other for tears, weeping. And at that time I guess they wanted a monument but that never came to fruition and so in the last couple of years we’ve been working on it and now it’s here.”
The monument is located in the college’s courtyard for people to see.
“We hope it gives them an opportunity to sit and reflect if they want to or need to,” said Lake.
