L’ANSE– The Upper Peninsula Solar Technical Assistance and Resource Team (UPSTART) held a public forum in L’Anse tonight about a potential community solar garden in the village.

Community members would buy shares to keep the garden running. It would be located near the L’Anse Industrial Park on Lambert Road, right off of  U.S. Highway 41.

Organizers gave a presentation at the forum on what the project would entail. Then, people were invited to ask questions and give comments. Some concerns were over feasibility and financing.

Emily Prehoda, Mich. Tech Environmental and Energy Policy grad student (UPSTART) says, “We know that solar is technically feasible up here. It works. But we want to know what folks think about it. Do they want to have it up here? Are they accepting of a project like this? On top of that, can we find a program that works that all residents and businesses in L’Anse can buy into something like this or participate. So, low to moderate income as well as all other residents.”

In the fall, organizers will also send out a survey to residents and businesses to receive additional feedback. One last forum will be held in December once the surveys are reviewed.
