Concerns about Ishpeming intersection: police issue warning

An accident this morning at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Lakeshore Drive in Ishpeming has prompted Ishpeming Police to issue a warning. 

Ishpeming Police Chief Steven Snowaert issued a press release today saying, motorists should "stay alert and to use use caution when entering this intersection."

Since January 1 of this year, the Ishpeming Police have responded to ten accidents at this intersection involving 20 vehicles and six reported injuries.  In the others,

  • Four were caused by a driver disregarding a traffic light
  • Four were listed as Failure to Yield the Right of Way
  • One was Fail to Stop within an Assured Clear Distance
  • One was caused by a vehicle striking an object in the roadway

In the incident at 9:40 a.m. today, a 2009 Impala traveling west on U.S. 41 disregarded the traffic light and hit a 2000 Mercury traveling north on Lakeshore.  Two people in the Impala complained on minor injuries, one person in the Mercury complained of minor injuries.

The driver of the Impala was cited for Disregarding a Traffic light.

The Ishpeming Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Marquette County Sheriff Department, the Ishpeming Fire Department and UPHS EMS.
