STRAITS OF MACKINAC– Enbridge is starting the process of creating a new tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac.
The plan is to make the new pipeline safer. The around $500 million project will be 100 ft. below the lake bed with thick walls to reduce the chances of any product getting into the water.
“There is a big need for the energy on Line 5, especially here in the U.P.,” said Ryan Duffy, Communications Strategist, Enbridge. “Line 5 provides 65-percent of the propane used in the U.P. and then 55-percent of the propane used statewide. And then, 30-percent of the oil on Line 5 goes to Marathon and other Detroit area refineries.”
Enbridge says they will continue to work on the current Line 5 by adding safety enhancements – including cameras. The project is expected to be completed by 2024.
