KINGSFORD – Teachers and students at Kingsford Middle School are asking for some help to build their new maker space.
It’s a creative place for students to design and build projects. They’re calling it The Garage. The idea for a maker space was brought up after student interest in STEM learning says Justin Cowen, Technology Integration and Innovation Specialist for Breitung Township Schools.
“We want to expose students to as much as possible so they’re not just learning about it, but they’re actually doing the creation. We earmarked that we really needed a maker space and we had been thinking about it, thinking about it and finally we said, ‘Let’s just do it.’ So we kind of just decided to pick a room and get our students involved so that they create that space so that they actually have a really cool ownership of it,” Cowen says.
Hand tools, small power tools, electronics and wood are examples of some of the donations needed. The next collection event is May 25th, and there will be another held on June 1st.
