MARQUETTE — For most of the winter in recent years, Lakeshore Boulevard is closed off to motorists.

But in 2020, Phase 1 of the Lakeshore Boulevard Relocation Project will begin. The Marquette commissioners voted on the matter earlier today.

Fred Stonehouse, Mayor of Marquette said, “Lakeshore boulevard is a critical artery for the City of Marquette. It is how people journey to and see and enjoy and explore Presque Isle. So we’ve got to maintain that road, we’ve got to keep it open because if we don’t we lose it and we’ll never have it again.”

The project was confirmed with a five to two vote allowing the City of Marquette to move forward with the $12 million grant that has been awarded.

The construction will begin sometime next year.
