DICKINSON COUNTY, MI – News came in this morning that Beau LaFave defeated Scott Celello 53% to 47% for the 108th District seat. Last night, however, Celello called LaFave to concede. Both LaFave and Celello shared their reactions from the night.

“Pure elation,” said LaFave. “Everybody wanted to believe that everybody felt like we were going to win the thing. Everybody knew how hard everybody worked and when Scott called, everybody was just thrilled. The room erupted and it’s been crazy ever since.”

“I’ve had a lot of support not only from my immediate family but close friends, people I’ve worked with, and supporters from the past,” said Celello. “I can’t say enough of the support I’ve had.”

LaFave will, of course, be replacing State Representative Ed McBroom. Just last week, McBroom was in Escanaba giving LaFave his support for the 108th District seat.

“Beau needs to make his own way and work on the issues,” said McBroom. “There are certainly some issues for the U.P. that I think cannot be let go of. We need to fix the dark store problem, we need to continue to push the skilled trades and vocational and technical education. There are so many things that need to continue on that weren’t just Ed McBroom’s projects.”

“He’s a good man,” said LaFave. “It was so nice to have Ed when we were biting our nails and crunching the numbers, saying, ‘Oh, what if this?’ or ‘What if that?’ He knew his numbers down and he was reassuring the whole time. Just calm and steady the whole time, it was really helpful.”

McBroom’s resourcefulness to LaFave doesn’t stop here, however. After speaking with the pair last evening, both McBroom and LaFave told Local 3 they had a long drive to Lansing still ahead of them.
