MARQUETTE– The annual Softball in the Dome takes place Feb. 9-11 at the Superior Dome in Marquette. This is the 25th anniversary of the event that raises funds for Michigan Special Olympics Area 36 serving Alger, Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw and Marquette counties.

Opening ceremonies will take place Friday at 6 p.m. at the Dome. A parade of team players and Special Olympics athletes will be the main focus. “It’s really kind of neat when they do this, because the softball players really support the Special Olympics athletes,” said Charles Crotty, event organizer.

Those attending the indoor games will not only support local Special Olympics, “the teams playing are some of the finest softball teams in the Midwest,” Crotty said. Admission is free; however, attendees may purchase food and drinks from the Dome’s concession stand. Last year team fees raised $3,800 for Special Olympics.

The event is sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council 689 in Marquette, with help from other councils and Fourth Degree Assemblies.

Games schedule: Friday 10 a.m. until about midnight. Saturday: 9 a.m. until about midnight. Sunday: 8 a.m. until about 5 p.m.
