ESCANABA — With the opening of Hobby Lobby and a Starbucks and a new Marshalls under construction, Escanaba business is booming. A new, family-owned business is celebrating its grand opening today.
U.P.utt, a new U.P. themed, glow-in-the-dark miniature golf course opened its doors today. The owners Don and Vicky wanted to create a fun, year-round activity for the Delta County area.
“I said ‘honey I have an idea. Are you willing to come out of retirement?’ I said ‘our community needs this. There’s nothing like it around. We need a safe haven for kids to come, no alcohol, family-oriented’…and that was it,” explains Don Martin, Owner at U.P.utt.
Not only does it have mini golf but it also has an arcade, food, birthday rooms, and meeting rooms that are free for local non-profits to use. Don says they wanted to create a business to give back to the community.
“That was fundamental to me. The idea behind it was let’s give a percentage of the proceeds from mini golf every month to a worthy charity in the U.P. Not only will we present them with a check at the end of the month but we have a white board that we’re going to be setting up with their mission statement on there, so that everybody that comes in gets exposed to that charity and understands what they do for our community,” says Don.
He adds that a few local non-profits have already approached him, showing their 501(c)3’s.
U.P.utt is now open seven days a week. The current hours are:
- Monday through Thursday noon to 8 p.m.
- Friday noon to 9:00 p.m.
- Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
- Sunday noon to 5:00 p.m.
