MICHIGAN– For years, the Soo Locks have been in desperate need of refurbishment. In fact, a new lock must be built. President Trump’s new budget allocates $75 million towards the Soo Locks for necessary updates and construction. U.S. Senator Gary Peters says this is a positive step for a very important issue.

“I’ve been working very aggressively with my colleagues to push this forward,” said Sen. Peters. “I think we’re the closest we’ve ever been to seeing some concrete action when it comes to the Soo Locks. We now have the Army Corps of Engineers that states very clearly that this in one of the critical pieces of infrastructure for the whole country; but we’re going to have to be focused on this for many years ahead. The $75 million is an important first step but this is a project that may cost many hundreds of millions of dollars.

Also included in President Trump’s budget is a 90 percent cut to Great Lakes restoration funding. Peters says this funding is critical to keep our great lakes clean and he’s very disappointed that President Trump cut it by so much.

“This is money that is used to clean up old toxic sites that are along our shores that need to be cleaned up and the Great Lakes provide drinking water for over 40 million people,” said Sen. Peters. “It’s integral to our economy in Michigan. This is money that we must spend to make sure that the Great Lakes are clean, not only for us, but for future generations.”
