A 14-year-old girl is dead and another escaped injury after an ATV crash Saturday in Marquette County’s Sands Township.

The Michigan State Police at the Negaunee Post say the accident happened at about 7:30 p.m. near M-553 about a mile north of the Crossroads.  Police say the ATV was traveling on a logging road known as the Honor Camp Trail – a road that connects M-553 and Silver Creek Road.

14-year-old Haley Vanabel of Marquette died at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident.  Her passenger, 14-year-old Zoe Kurian of Marquette, was not injured.  Both girls were reportedly wearing safety belts.

Police say the teens were riding in a side-by-side type ATV when it went off the trail, up a dirt embankment and rolled over.

Assisting at the scene: Sands Township First Responders, Marquette County Search & Rescue, Marquette County Sheriff Deputies and UP Health System Marquette.
