MARQUETTE — UP Health System – Marquette announced that Pavan Gorukanti, MD, has joined its Intensive Care Unit.

Dr. Gorukanti earned his medical degree from Manipal Academy of Higher Education in Mangalore, India. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Michigan State University in East Lansing, where he also went on to hold the position of Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine.

Following this role, Dr. Gorukanti underwent specialized training in his fellowship for pulmonary disease and critical care medicine at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.

Dr. Gorukanti’s research focuses on special issues in pulmonary medicine, including early detection of tracheomalacia and the diagnostic significance of computational tomography in pulmonary diseases (CTPA), among a diversity of related areas.

He brings a highly specialized medical skillset to UP Health System – Marquette, including procedural experience in bronchoscopy, EBUS, percutaneous tracheostomy, intubation, central line and arterial line placements, lumbar puncture, paracentesis, thoracocentesis, and chest tube placement.

Dr. Gorukanti also has a strong track record of implementing quality improvement measures in healthcare, including a one month rotation in residency through which analyzing PCI mortality and measures led to improved outcomes and documentation.

Dr. Gorukanti has been heavily involved in volunteerism and charitable activity, including coordinating and volunteering for a pilot project at Michigan State University for post-discharge follow-up for patients with limited access to a primary care physician, volunteering his medical expertise for underserved populations in Lansing, MI, and organizing free cancer education and screening in underserved villages around Hyderabad, India through the Yashoda Charitable Trust.

His personal interests include nature walking and birdwatching, one of several reasons why he chose to practice in the Upper Peninsula. He is also an international soccer fan.
