MARQUETTE – As plenty of shoppers will be hunting for deals, one store will be handling its first Black Friday.

This will be the first year the Meijer in Marquette will be open for Black Friday. As expected, shoppers will be out in search of some great deals. But there’s also a side to the day that shoppers won’t see.

“There’s a tremendous amount of merchandise that comes through the store,” said John Spaulding, Store Director at Meijer of Marquette. “We’ve got to unstack it, get it out and get it signed so there’s literally a couple of weeks behind the scenes getting ready for these kind of really busy days to take care of our customers during that.”

One of the more popular pieces of merchandise are electronics, with gaming systems being a hot commodity.

“We put out some really hot electronic items and a really good looking ad for both Thursday and Friday so people can kind of get that done all at once,” said Spaulding.

Though it may seem like a hectic day, Black Friday is not the busiest shopping day during the holidays. The day after Thanksgiving marks the start of the holiday shopping period.

“It’s not as stressful as how we all might think Black Friday used to be, you know with the mass crazy lines,” says Spaulding. “We’re not like that at Meijer, we’re open 24 hours, you can come in and take your time and shop. Our ads are great and start at 6 a.m. so that’s when the prices are in effect. It’s a little chilled out experience than maybe in the past.”

And if you happened to miss out on Black Friday, there’s no reason to worry. Most stores, such as the bigger brand named stores, will be having deals all weekend long. Or, if you simply don’t want to leave the house, there’s always Cyber Monday.
