December 18, 2017 – The Michigan Indigent Defense Commission (MIDC) will meet tomorrow to begin considering more than 130 compliance plans that include the implementation of four new standards established by the MIDC last May. The meeting will take place at 1:00pm in the lower level of the Capitol National Bank Building at 200 N. Washington Square in Lansing.

The commission will vote on whether to approve an opening series of plans submitted by counties and municipalities from around the state. The MIDC is scheduled to consider the remaining plans during meetings scheduled for Jan. 5 and 8, 2018. Every court funding unit in Michigan is required to submit a plan for compliance with the first four standards for indigent defense, along with a cost analysis.

“The MIDC staff has completed the thorough review of all compliance plans filed with the state and the proposals are ready for the commission’s consideration,” said MIDC Executive Director Jonathon Sacks. “We look forward to working with counties and municipalities to ensure that approved plans are implemented efficiently to maintain fair justice in Michigan.”

The MIDC’s new standards involve education and training, the initial client interview, experts and investigators, and counsel at first appearance in front of a judge or magistrate and other critical stages.

A list of plans under consideration tomorrow can be found on the meeting agenda here.

The Michigan Indigent Defense Commission was created to establish and enforce uniform indigent defense standards throughout the state. Its members are appointed by the governor upon nominations by the Michigan Legislature, Michigan Supreme Court, State Bar of Michigan, and other stakeholders in the criminal justice system, including the general public.
