Names released in fatal Alger County snowmobile accident

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office investigation concluded that  34-year-old Jason Craig Bashor, from Maryland, and 34-year-old Shaena Leigh Hicks, from Virginia, were the pair traveling  involved in a snowmobile accident Sunday on Trail #8 when they failed to negotiate a curve in the trail.  The snowmobiles left the trail and struck multiple trees. 

Hicks was transported to Munising Memorial Hospital and treated for her injuries.  Bashor sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced at the scene. 

The cause of the accident is attributed to excessive speed and operational inexperience. Alcohol was not a contributing factor.

One person is dead and another injured after a snowmobile accident Sunday afternoon.

According to the Alger County Sheriff’s Office, the Alger County dispatch received a report of a snowmobile accident at about 1:20 p.m. on Trail #8 approximately one mile west of M-94 in Shingleton. 

The investigation concluded that a 34 year old male and a 34 year old female were traveling westbound on Trail #8 when they failed to negotiate a curve in the trail.  The snowmobiles left the trail and struck multiple trees. 

The female victim was transported to Munising Memorial Hospital and treated for injuries.  The male victim sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced at the scene. 

The cause of the accident is attributed to excessive speed and operational inexperience.  Alcohol was not a contributing factor.  Names are being withheld until proper notifications are made.
