New Downtown Marquette Parking Meters Operational Monday

MARQUETTE, MI – The new on-street parking meters throughout Marquette’s Downtown District will officially go live beginning Monday, August 21, 2017. The approximately 365 modern parking meters feature smart technology, offering residents and visitors convenient payment options including coins, credit and debit cards and flexible stay times ranging from one to three to ten-hour parking limits depending on location. Parking time limits, rates, and enforcement hours are easily identified on each meter’s digital display screen and through additional meter signage.

The parking rate remains at 50 cents per hour; however, users may insert 25 cents and receive a half hour of time for shorter stays. The resulting meter turnover will improve parking availability and accessibility for users enjoying downtown’s businesses and amenities. For even more customer convenience, future plans also include offering “pay-by-phone” technology.

 
Parking meters are located on the 100 block of East Washington Street, the 100, 200 and 300 blocks of West Washington Street, the 100 block of East Main Street, the 100 block of West Main Street, the 100 block of West Spring Street, the 100, 200 and 300 blocks of West Baraga Avenue, the 100 and 200 blocks of South Third Street, the 100 block of North Third Street and the Commons Parking Lot. In addition, each public parking lot has several 10-hour meters for those who choose to stay longer than the 2-hour complimentary parking provided.
 
Two pay stations are currently in operation in the lower level of the Bluff Street Parking Ramp and one has been installed in the North Main Street Parking Lot. The pay station in the North Main Street Parking Lot will be operable in coming weeks. Motorists should utilize the pay stations upon arrival by entering their license plate number and paying for the desired stay time before beginning their time in Marquette’s Downtown District.   
 
Parking throughout Marquette’s Downtown District is enforced Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. through 6 p.m., with complimentary evening and weekend parking provided. For those who live, work or spend extended periods of time downtown, rental parking permits are available through the Marquette Downtown Development Authority (DDA) office located at 203 South Front Street, Suite 1-B, Marquette, Michigan 49855.
 
All parking meter and rental permit parking revenue is reinvested by the DDA into downtown’s parking system for snow removal and improvements to parking lots, sidewalks, walkways, and lighting. Parking violation fines are received by the City of Marquette and become part of the General Fund. The City of Marquette Police Department and the DDA will be courteously working with the public to help facilitate the transition to metered on-street parking.
