MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site Greco-Roman wrestler Dalton Roberts earned a spot on USA Wrestling’s World Team yesterday at the Senior World Team Trials in Tulsa, Okla. The team will compete in Budapest, Hungary, at the Senior World Wrestling Championships in October.

Roberts, of downstate Fowlerville, secured an automatic berth to the best-of-three finals in the 60 kg weight class after placing first at the U.S. Open in April. He faced the winner of the challenge tournament, Ildar Hafizov of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, who was seeking his sixth trip to the World Championships. Hafizov is also a 2008 Olympian who competed for Uzbekistan.

After dropping a close first match 3-4, Roberts came back in match two with a 10-2 tech fall victory. In the third and decisive match, Roberts was down 0-1 going into the second period, but he came back to win 4-3. The win gives him his first Senior World Team appearance.
