ESCANABA – Progress is being made on the building of a new Delta County Jail.

Delta County Sheriff Ed Oswald tells the Radio Results Network that the bids have gone out for the project, and the county is now locked into a design for the facility, which will be built at the county’s service center building near Bay College.

“I’m expecting to break ground next month,” Oswald told RRN News on Wednesday. “Bid packages are all put together, bids should be coming in, and we’re getting very close.”

Oswald expects the jail will be open on schedule by the end of next year. And it couldn’t come a moment too soon, as the sheriff says the current jail in downtown Escanaba is now officially in an “emergency overcrowding” situation.
