Bond has been set at $2.5 million for 42 year old Paul David Moilanen. The Hubbell man is charged with Second Degree Murder and Attempted murder in the stabbing death of a woman and stabbing injuries to a teenage girl early Friday morning.

At about 3:30 A.M. on September 19, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department responded to a stabbing complaint in Hubbell, Torch Lake Township.

Marcy Lavigne, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 14 year old girl was found with multiple stab wounds on her body.

The 14 year old girl called 911, and was taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital by Mercy Ambulance.

The suspect – now identified as Moilanen – ran from the scene, but was found in the woods near the residence and taken into custody about two hours later.

Houghton County law enforcement was assisted by Houghton and Hancock City Police, Laurium Village Police, Keweenaw Co. Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police – Calumet Post and the MSP Forensic Crime Lab, Bootjack First Responders and Houghton Co. Medical Examiner’s staff.

According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, was released from prison September 28, 2012 after serving about seven years  for “assault with intent to rob while armed” in Houghton County.
