MANISTIQUE — Manistique just got a whole lot more colorful thanks to The Power of Words Project.

Creator of the project, Mia Tavonatti, originally of Iron Mountain, goes to communities and creates murals, with the help of local artists, based off of one word.

Tavonatti, explains, “I won ArtPrize in 2011 and I came off a lot of words being thrown around, a lot of critics. People either loving you or hating you. I was trying to think of something to do, at that time, and I just came up with The Power of Words Project, all based on the power of words.”

Teresa Bratton, Rresident, Lake Effect Community Arts, a sponsor for the mural, says, “The whole idea is that the word is your vision of the future for your community. So twenty words were nominated and then the community voted on those words and ‘discover’ got the most votes, so discover was chosen as the word. And then Mia Tavonatti designed the mural around that word.”

With more than 1600 votes cast, the word ‘discover’ was chosen for the mural, which is on the side of People’s Store in downtown Manistique, and the buzz from the mural is already bringing visitors to town.

Alan Barr, CEO/Executive Director, Schoolcraft Tourism and Commerce, also a sponsor, says, “Every day while they’ve been painting for the last month, crowds have been gathering watching them work and trying to guess ‘well, okay what letter is that?’ and ‘what’s this?’ so it’s been creating a buzz across the community.”

Tavonatti adds, “I’ve never spent a month in a community that was friendlier than this. I hope it has surpassed their expectations.”
