SILVER CLIFF, WI – UPDATE: The names of the two men have been released.

According to the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Tristan Gilgenbach and 35-year-old Matthew Nitecki were the two men killed in the ATV crash. Gilgenbach was the driver and Nitecki was the passenger.

Investigators say they were not wearing helmets. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.


ORIGINAL STORY : Two people are dead after crashing their ATV into a tree.

According to Marinette County Sheriff Jerome Sauve, dispatch received a call shortly before 1 a.m. this morning of an ATV crash on Boat Landing 11 Road at Beverly Lane in Silver Cliff.

Once Sheriff’s Deputies and Silver Cliff Rescue Squad arrived at the scene, investigation showed the ATV was driving westbound on Beverly Lane when it crossed Boat Landing Road and hit an oak tree.

The passenger of the ATV, a 35-year-old Milwaukee man, was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by the Deputy Coroner due to head, neck, and internal injuries.

The driver of the ATV, a 37-year-old Milwaukee man, was treated at the scene and transported to Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette where he later died due to massive injuries to his head and internal injuries.

The names of the deceased men are being withheld at this time pending notifications of family members.

The crash remains under investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office and County Coroner. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wisconsin DNR, State Patrol, Silver Cliff Rescue Squad, Bay Area Medical Center paramedics and Marinette County Coroner’s Office.
