NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP– The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter is one of 270 rescue groups across the country to partner with Best Friends Animal Society to offer fee-waived adoptions.
“All kitty cats that are six months and up are fee-waived from now until July 4th,” said Ann Brownell, Community Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator, UPAWS.
Between all of the shelters, the hope is help 10,000 pets get adopted in just 10 days.
“That includes the spay, the neuter, vaccines, microchip and a vet check and love,” said Brownell.
Through the Best Friends Animal Society, people can give a $25 donation which goes towards events like this one. UPAWS says they see more adult cats during the summer months, which is why the special is geared towards them.
“Every shelter has a different one,” said Brownell. “Some might have an over abundance of dogs or maybe senior pets. We went ahead and chose adult cats. Typically across the nation in the summer months shelters see cats galore. It’s kitten season and stray cats come in and mother cats come in with litters. Just lots of kitty cats. So, this is a way to hopefully get some more adopted.”
According to the Utah based Best Friends Animal Society they say their mission is ‘To bring about a time when there are no homeless pets.’ And their vision is ‘A better world through kindness to animals.
