UPDATE: A Lansing man, Aaron Roberts, 34, is charged with homicide after police say he shot a man inside in an Upper Peninsula cabin.
Roberts is accused of killing Kevin Belonga, 51, of St. Ignace.
The incident took place in Trout Lake Township, Chippewa County on Saturday, when troopers were called to a cabin on O.J. Miller Road.
State police say when they arrived on scene and took Roberts into custody, he identified himself as “the shooter.”
The area was secured and Roberts was taken into custody without incident, inside the cabin Troopers found Kevin Belonga, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the sworn affidavit, state police say Roberts admitted to investigators that he shot Belonga.
Monday morning Roberts was arraigned in the 91st District Court of Chippewa County on one count of homicide and one county felony firearm.
State police say the incident is still under investigation.
Roberts is being held on a $100,000 bond, if convicted he could face up to 15 years in prison. A probably cause hearing was scheduled for August 23, 2018.
It is believe that Roberts was in the U.P. vacationing in Trout Lake.
The MSP was assisted by the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Sault Ste. Marie Tribal Police Department, Chippewa Township EMS, detectives from the Sault Ste. Marie and Negaunee MSP posts, and the MSP Grayling Forensic Lab.
An investigation continues this evening after one person was killed in a shooting in Chippewa County.
The Michigan State Police from the Sault Ste. Marie post responded to a rental cabin in Trout Lake Saturday at about 4 p.m. on a report of a shooting.
One deceased shooting victim was found at the scene. One person was taken into custody.
The Michigan State Police personnel were assisted by Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Sault Tribal Police, Chippewa Township EMS, detectives from the Sault Ste. Marie and Negaunee MSP posts and the MSP Grayling Forensic Lab.
