Sands Township, Marquette County – Troopers found that a 2005 Pontiac Vibe, driven by Nathanial Carpenter, age 80 of Marquette, was travelling northbound on M-553 when his vehicle crossed the centerline and struck a Marquette City Police 2017 Dodge Charger patrol car driven by Officer Jacqueline Sweeney, age 45 of Marquette that was travelling southbound on M-553.
Carpenter was pronounced dead at the scene. Sweeney was transported by EMS to UP Health Systems in Marquette where she is listed in stable condition.
The crash remains under investigation

Sands Township, Marquette County – On May 1st, 2018 at 4:09 p.m., Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Negaunee Post were dispatched to M-553 just south of the Marquette City limits (south of the Marquette Mountain Ski Hill) for the report of a personal injury crash involving a Marquette City Police patrol car and another passenger vehicle.
Investigation at the scene revealed a 2005 Pontiac Vibe, driven by 80 year old Nathanial Carpenter of Marquette, was travelling northbound on M-553 when it crossed the centerline and struck the Marquette City Police patrol car that was travelling southbound on M-553. Carpenter was pronounced dead at the scene. The Police Officer was transported to UP Health Systems in Marquette for treatment and is listed in stable condition.
M-553 was temporarily closed while MSP traffic crash investigators processed the scene.
The crash remains under investigation; however, it appears that a pre-existing medical condition likely contributed to the crash.
