Shawano County Sheriff Randy Wright says a two car collision that killed three teenagers occurred as one of the vehicles swerved to avoid a car that stopped to make a turn into a residence.
According to Wright, at 5:21 PM Tuesday evening, a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Mark Retzlof of Shawano stopped to turn into the driveway of a home on Highway 22 north of Friendship Road.
While waiting to turn, a vehicle approached from behind at a high rate of speed. That vehicle swerved onto the shoulder to go around Swadner’s vehicle, lost control on the gravel and plowed into a southbound SUV.
Sheriff Wright says two of the four people in the car that plowed into the SUV died at the scene.
Deputies have identified the victims as 17-year-old Cody Borsche of Shawano and 18-year-old Tyler Welch of Shawano. The driver of that vehicle, 17-year-old Ryan Swadner of Clintonville and another passenger 15-year-old Paige Brunette of Bonduel were taken to a hospital in Shawano. Brunette later died of injuries related to the crash.
The driver of the SUV, 27-year-old Duane Jarvis of Bear Creek, suffered non-life threatening injuries and sought his own treatment.
Retzloff’s vehicle was not impacted during the collision. Accident reconstruction teams were on the scene for five-hours. Investigators are still looking into possible contributing factors in the crash.
Meantime, grief counselors are at Shawano High School to aid students and staff.
