ISHPEMING — A vacant home was destroyed in a fire just before 6 o’clock last night in Ishpeming.
Around 5:57 p.m., the City of Ishpeming Fire Department reported that they were called to a structure fire at 314 Division Street in Ishpeming by Marquette County Central Dispatch.
One firefighter who was at the Fire Hall located on Lake Street smelled smoke in the area and went to investigate.
Upon arrival, he said he found flames traveling up the rear of a house at the 314 Division Street address. He called 911 to report the fire and ran back to the Fire Hall and drove one of the fire trucks to the scene. Fire officials say that his quick actions possibly prevented a much larger fire.
Firefighters’ encountered a large amount of fire at the exterior rear of the structure, the fire went into the walls and gained entry into the attic and a double roof of the structure making extinguishment difficult.
The structure at 314 Division Street is vacant and located no more than five feet from the old Andriacchi’s Grocery Store.The structure is a total loss and was not insured.
Assisting at the scene were the Ishpeming Township Fire Department, City of Negaunee Fire Department, Marquette County 131 Rescue, Ishpeming Police Department, UPPCO and SEMCO also assisted on scene. The Salvation Army also offered services to the firefighters on scene.
Fire crews cleared the scene by 10 p.m. Monday night.
No injuries were reported from the fire, and is still under investigation.
