HOUGHTON, MI – Michigan Tech head hockey coach Joe Shawhan announces seven incoming players for the 2019-20 season. The class consists of goaltender Blake Pietila, defensemen Brendan Datema and Chris Lipe, and forwards Jake Crespi, Logan Ganie, Logan Pietila, and Parker Saretsky.
Blake and Logan Pietila are twins while Logan Ganie and Parker Saretsky have been teammates for six years, including the last three with Spruce Grove. Logan Pietila and Chris Lipe were teammates at Dubuque.
Blake Pietila • Howell, Michigan • Cedar Rapids (USHL)
Pietila is a 5-foot-11, 165-pound goaltender. He played the last two seasons with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the USHL, earning All-USHL Second Team honors after the 2018-19 season. Pietila was second in the USHL with 30 regular-season victories, ranking third in goals-against average (2.30) and fourth in save percentage (.912). He had a career USHL record of 46-30-3. Pietila played for Team USA at the 2018 World Junior A Challenge in December, appearing in three games and winning a Gold Medal. He compiled a .903 save percentage and 3.03 goals against average during his first season with the RoughRiders. He has also played for Compuware U16 and Little Caesars U16. The Compuware U16 team won the USA Hockey National Title in 2016-17.
Brendan Datema [DAT-eh-ma] • Sterling Heights, Michigan • Amarillo (NAHL)
Datema is 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds. He was named the NAHL Defenseman of the Year after a breakout offensive season where he tallied 21 goals and 39 assists in 58 games for the Amarillo Bulls. His 60 points led all NAHL defensemen, tallying the most points in the league by a defenseman since the 1988-89 season and second most in NAHL history. He led his team to the semifinals of the Robertson Cup and was also named All-NAHL First Team, All-South Division Team, South Division Defenseman of the Year, and the NAHL’s Defenseman of the Month in both September and March. He was also invited to the NAHL Prospect Tournament in February 2019 in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Datema played for Belle Tire U18 (2016-17) and Victory Honda U16 (2015-16) before joining Amarillo.
Chris Lipe [Lyp] • Rockford, Michigan • Dubuque (USHL)
Lipe is 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds. He’s played 118 games in the USHL over the last two seasons. He had 16 points (3 goals, 13 assists) in 62 games last season for the Dubuque Fighting Saints. He appeared in 55 games for the Des Moines Buccaneers in 2017-18 as a teammate of Brian Halonen. Lipe also played a season in the NAHL with Kenai River in 2016-17 and was named to the All-Midwest Division Rookie Team.
Jake Crespi [KRESP-ee] • Brighton, Michigan • Tri-City (USHL)
Crespi is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound forward. He played the last two seasons with the Tri-City Storm of the USHL and served as an alternate captain in 2018-19. He tallied 27 points on 16 goals and 11 assists in 69 games with the Storm. He had an injury-shortened 2018-19 with 12 points (4 goals, 8 assists) in 18 games. He appeared in 51 games in his first season in Tri-City during the 2017-18 season, tallying 15 points. Crespi was named the 2017 Michigan Mr. Hockey after winning a state championship with Brighton High School. As an All-State selection, he scored 30 goals, and tallied 29 assists in 31 games, recording 21 more points than any of his teammates. He was an alternate captain in his second season with Brighton after playing three seasons with Belle Tire.
Logan Ganie [GAIN-ee] • Irma, Alberta • Spruce Grove (AJHL)
Ganie is 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds. He played 161 games over the last three seasons with the Spruce Grove Saints in the AJHL, tallying 49 goals and 70 assists. Ganie had a breakout offensive season in 2018-19 with 53 points on 24 goals and 29 assists in 54 games to lead the Saints. He also tallied 19 points (5 goals, 14 assists) in the playoffs to rank second in the league. The Saints were AJHL Playoff Champions in 2017-18 when Ganie was an alternate captain. He had 40 points in 56 games. He was named to the North Division All-Rookie Team in 2016-17 after recording 25 points in 48 games. Ganie played four seasons in the Lloydminster organization before Spruce Grove.
Logan Pietila • Howell, Michigan • Dubuque (USHL)
Pietila is 5-foot-11 and 157 pounds. He played in 119 USHL games for the Dubuque Fighting Saints over the past two seasons. Pietila tallied 35 points on 12 goals and 23 assists in 2018-19 and 20 points on six goals and 14 assists in 2017-18. He played with his brother on Compuware U16 and Little Caesars U16 before entering the USHL. The Compuware U16 team won the USA Hockey National Title in 2016-17.
Parker Saretsky [Sah-RET-ski] • Wainwright, Alberta • Spruce Grove (AJHL)
Saretsky is 6-foot and 170 pounds. He played 152 games in the AJHL with his final three seasons for Spruce Grove. Saretsky was second on the team with 56 points in 57 games last season as an alternate captain, scoring 17 goals and adding 39 assists. He also tallied 18 points (6 goals, 12 assists) in the playoffs to rank fourth in the league. In 2017-18, Saretsky had 60 points in 55 regular season games with 22 goals and 38 assists. The Saints went on to win the AJHL Playoff Championship with Saretsky, tallying nine points in 13 games. He was invited to the Canada West tryouts in 2017-18 an 2018-19 and played three seasons in the Lloydminster organization before playing in the AJHL.
