The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today announced that, due to the dangerously cold weather, it has canceled several outdoor programs and events scheduled for this weekend, particularly in the Upper Peninsula where temperatures are forecasted to be below zero (Fahrenheit) with wind chill.

Visitors are advised to call in advance to check for event cancellations. A listing of park phone numbers is available on the DNR’s website at Contact information also is provided for each event on the DNR’s GO-Get Outdoors calendar at

One of the canceled events is the lantern-lit cross-country ski event at Bewabic State Park, which was scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 14.

“The cold temperatures and wind chill will not only make people uncomfortable,” said Bewabic State Park Supervisor Kasey Mahony, “but also may cause weather-related safety risks and injury.”

Bewabic State Park currently is not planning to reschedule the event because staff is busy making preparations for the spring and summer seasons. Other events may be rescheduled based on park staff availability. Please check directly with each park for details.

The DNR advises checking the weather forecast before spending any extended length of time outdoors during the winter months, and dressing in layers in preparation for cold temperatures and wind chill.
